Winter breeches are a must in Montana, and Irideon and SmartPak are the two brands I reach for most.
My Irideon WindTech breeches are around 10 years old. They’re wearing thin and starting to sag, but I still can’t bring myself to throw them away! The smooth outer fabric keeps hay from sticking, while the soft fleece lining keeps me warm. They’re substantial enough that I don’t need another layer underneath, and they don’t bunch or chafe in the saddle. They’ve stayed put through years of riding and barn chores and have worn like steel!
SmartPak’s heavyweight winter breeches are another favorite. They have a smooth exterior, a waistband, a zipper, and pockets, giving them a slightly dressier look. They’re warm, and I’ve often found them on sale. My only complaint is that mine tend to sag in the front.
The SmartPak tights, however, haven’t worked as well for me. I’m constantly pulling them up until I get in the saddle, so they usually end up at the bottom of my winter pile.
For long, cold days at the barn, I want warmth, durability, and a fit that stays put. My old Irideons have certainly earned their keep!
