Dressage whips—we use them every day, but what’s your favorite brand?
Length matters, especially when competing, but a whip also needs to feel balanced and comfortable in your hand. If I’m constantly adjusting my grip or working to keep it in position, it becomes a distraction.
If your whip budget is unlimited, a Fleck would certainly be on my list! But if you’re like me, you have one in each trailer, one next to a stall door, one left in the tack-up area, and another in the arena. Buying that many Fleck whips just isn’t going to happen!
My favorite is the Snowbee whip with reflective thread. It has a very nice balance, a comfortable grip, and a cap on the handle that’s large enough to keep it from slipping through my hand. At the $16 price I’ve found, I can afford to buy a couple—and keep one where I need it!
Too stiff, too floppy, too heavy—it’s surprising how different one whip can feel from another. Trying one in your hand before buying it can make a difference. What feels perfectly balanced to one rider may feel awkward to another.
Of course, how we use it matters more than the name on the handle. I want my whip to help me give a clear, quiet aid, then return to riding without nagging. Being able to carry it without accidentally tapping my horse is just as important as being able to use it when needed.
